[ ABOUT ME ]

Hello. I take photos of things I find interesting that might look kind of plain to others but I still wanted to share. I have always liked taking photos and during covid lockdowns, like most of the rest of the world, wanted to try something new, but using my phone just didn't feel fun. I initially wanted to do film photography because I like that for the most part, I would only have that moment to take the photo or it's gone, but as I did research into cameras, I realized that buying and developing film can get costly, and I wouldn't have anywhere to store it eventually.

Finally, I learned about the Fujifilm X100 series, which I'm sure is SUCH a huge surprise to anyone who sees my photos and the colors. The camera was exactly what I wanted to learn on: dials that I could physically turn instead of menus, rangefinder look, prime lens. I liked the thought of being more restricted in the lens so that I had to physically move to compose my image, and a big concern of mine while researching was when I saw someone I knew fumbling with her many lenses while we were out. I know I could just stick with one, but I was still learning and really just wanted to get a camera to start taking pictures.

When I finally got a second hand X100T, I played around with it, set it to take both JPEG and RAW (because that's what the internet told me), and started to learn about exposure, ISO, aperture, all of that. After a little, I thought back to my initial plan of shooting film. Now that I was using a digital camera, I could technically take as many shots of something as I wanted, as long as it was still there. Plus, if I messed up something, I could still recover it with the RAW file and editing (once I learned how). It felt like I was cheating at the whole "single chance at a single moment" concept I had wanted.

I stuck with it though, because at least while I'm learning, I didn't have to wait for the photo to develop and didn't have to waste film on terrible shots. The instant feedback with the JPEG's could help me adjust right away and figure it all out. The one thing I just couldn't get into was editing. I hate editing. Not just because I'm bad at it, but because I spend my working hours at a computer coding and I didn't want to do something digital after specifically buying a more analog feeling camera.

Eventually, I had a thought: can't I just rely on the film simulations and only shoot JPEG? If, in the moment, I took the photo with the film recipe I chose for it, and I got the photo, then great. If I didn't, then oh well. It was as close to the original "one chance" idea as I could think of, but everyone online in my research said that a real photographer shot in RAW and edited. How much did I really care about other's opinions though, especially when I don't know them, and they don't know that I'm only shooting JPEG (well, the readers of this page do)?

I just want to take photos so...I only shoot JPEG and no one can stop me. :]
